The practicing podiatric physician is quite familiar with the unique aspects of pain medicine pharmacology and therapeutics. A myriad of pain products across several therapeutic classes are available for the management of pain. A basic understanding of several key factors should help podiatric physicians select appropriate preparations that maximize therapeutic efficacy yet minimize the potential for adverse effects. In addition to evaluating the relative potency of an active agent, clinicians should consider factors that modulate the clinical efficacy of the selected agent, such as the choice of active ingredient, the affected anatomical site, and the use of strong clinical base evidence.
